- violence is behaviour modification by coercion; propaganda aims at same by persuasion.
terrorism is combination of both.
- terrorism avoids head-on confrontation with uniformed army.
- its typical strategy is to generate fear in the public, which will pressure the state for concessions to their demands.
- strategies could be:
1) creating sympathy for terrorists' aims
2) increasing costs of occupying force
3) provoking state repression
- each of these strategies will require MASS AUDIENCE.
- terrorist attacks are choreographed not for first-hand witnesses, but for television cameras which will transmit the spectacle to a wider audience.
studying terrorism in media right now... makes me think how people using TWITTER AND FACEBOOK to bash on boyfriends are no different from terrorists.
